Case Study:
One Contractor, Two Critical Roles: A Dual Success Story

A detailed analysis of how digital marketing strategies can enhance the visibility and growth of small businesses.

One candidate was placed twice into two distinct technical teams

Filled niche gaps in engine testing and validation across sites

Contract role enabled career development from Technician to Engineer

Industry Overview

This global manufacturer specialises in diesel and gas engines built for demanding environments—construction, marine, and power generation. The Stafford site, where the contractor was placed, focuses on high-spec power systems. With operations across multiple international locations, the company supports industries that rely on precision engineering, compliance, and consistent performance.

The Requirement

The client needed support across two placements—both focused on engine testing and validation for large diesel and gas-fuelled engines. The first role involved hands-on engine build and instrumentation; the second required deeper involvement in emissions testing and data interpretation. Both demanded mechanical and electrical expertise, fault-finding skills, and confidence working in fast-paced, high-spec environments.

The Challenge

These roles are notoriously hard to fill. They require a rare blend of practical engine knowledge, data fluency, and adaptability. The site’s location added complexity, and the contract nature of the roles can deter candidates who don’t fully understand the flexibility and career-building potential of contractor work.

The technical requirements were niche: diesel engine strip-down and rigging, instrumentation setup (thermocouples, pressure transducers, emissions analysers), real-time data acquisition, ECU controller software, and electrical harness modification.

Our Approach

Seismic had already engaged with the candidate and understood his strengths. He brought extensive hands-on experience in diesel engine testing and validation, with a solid mechanical and electrical background. His previous role at a competitor had prepared him well for the Technician position, and that experience enabled a smooth progression into the Engineering role. His familiarity with off-highway and industrial engine platforms made him a strong match for both teams.

Technically, he was confident working with instrumentation and engine test systems, including DSG, Cadet, PUMA, and STARS. He understood ECU controller software and could modify electrical harnesses for test cell environments—skills that are hard to find and critical for fast-paced engine development.

For the first placement, we matched him to a Test Technician role supporting engine build and instrumentation. This contract role offered a clear path for career development, allowing him to demonstrate his capabilities and transition into an Engineering position. When a second opportunity came up—this time in a validation team—we reconnected quickly. In both cases, communication was clear, expectations were aligned, and the transitions were smooth.

The Outcome
  • Speed: Fast turnaround from outreach to signed contract
  • Impact: Candidate made an immediate contribution in both roles
  • Continuity: Trusted contractor who adapted across teams and projects
Candidate Experience

The candidate appreciated the clarity and support provided throughout both placements. He found the roles aligned with his career goals and praised Seismic’s professionalism and responsiveness. Both transitions were smooth, and he felt well-matched and well-supported.

Conclusion

This case study highlights the value of long-term relationships and thoughtful contractor engagement. By understanding the candidate’s strengths and aligning them with the right opportunities, Seismic delivered two successful placements that made a real difference.

Testimonial

“Both placements were spot on. The team at Seismic were clear, responsive, and genuinely supportive. I felt valued and well-matched each time.”
